Idron is a rapidly growing commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, located on the eastern outskirts of Pau in the historical province of Béarn. For much of the 20th century, the town's identity was defined by Camp d'Idron, a major military base that hosted the prestigious 1st Parachute Chasseur Regiment. Since the base's closure, Idron has undergone a successful transformation into a premier residential suburb, characterized by modern housing developments and high-quality public infrastructure. Geographically, it occupies a prime position on a plateau that provides impressive panoramic views of the Pyrenees mountain range. The Château d'Idron, an 18th-century manor, serves as a cultural heart for the community and a reminder of its pre-military aristocratic history. The town benefits from its close economic integration with the Pau metropolitan area, particularly the aeronautics and energy sectors. Residents enjoy a high standard of living with access to extensive sports facilities and green parks, while the town continues to honor its paratrooper heritage through monuments and memorial sites.
