Located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Mourenx stands as a fascinating example of 20th-century French urban planning. Built entirely from scratch in the late 1950s as a "Ville Nouvelle" (New Town), it was originally created to house the thousands of workers and their families employed at the massive, newly discovered Lacq natural gas field nearby. The town's architecture is deeply rooted in modernism, featuring functional, geometrically arranged residential blocks interspersed with expansive, well-maintained green spaces. A key landmark is the Belvédère observation tower, which provides an excellent vantage point over the town's unique layout and, on clear days, provides impressive views of the snow-capped Pyrenees mountains. Today, Mourenx has evolved into a spirited community that embraces its unusual industrial heritage while focusing on modern amenities. The town features dynamic cultural venues like the MI[X] arts center, which regularly hosts contemporary exhibitions and events. The lively local markets on Wednesday and Saturday mornings fill the squares with fresh Béarn produce. Additionally, the surrounding wooded foothills offer excellent trails for hikers and cyclists to enjoy the outdoors.
