Meudon is a prestigious commune in the Hauts-de-Seine department, perched on the hills overlooking the Seine River, southwest of Paris. Its history is deeply linked to the French monarchy, specifically through the Great Château of Meudon, which served as a residence for royalty before its destruction. Today, the site hosts the Paris Observatory's astrophysics branch, continuing a long tradition of scientific excellence. Meudon is also the sanctuary of Auguste Rodin, who lived and worked at the Villa des Brillants for the last 20 years of his life. The villa is now a museum where visitors can see the master's original plaster casts and his tomb. Nature is an integral part of the city's identity, with the Meudon Forest covering over half of its territory, providing extensive trails for cycling and hiking. Historically, the city is a pioneer in aviation, being the site of the first hydrogen balloon factory and home to the Hangar Y, a monumental airship hangar. This legacy continues today with the presence of ONERA, the French aerospace research center.
