Lisses is a contemporary commune in the Essonne department, located about 30 kilometers south of Paris. Formerly a quiet village, it underwent rapid expansion during the development of the Évry 'new town' in the 1970s. Lisses is globally recognized as the birthplace of Parkour (or Art du Déplacement). In the late 1980s and early 1990s, David Belle and the Yamakasi group used the town's unique modern architecture as their playground, transforming walls, stairs, and rooftops into obstacles. The town's most iconic landmark is the 'Dame du Lac,' a 15-meter tall concrete climbing sculpture designed by Ladislas Szabo in 1975, which has become a pilgrimage site for parkour practitioners worldwide. Economically, Lisses is a major industrial and logistics hub due to its proximity to the A6 motorway, housing significant distribution centers for brands like Coca-Cola. The town maintains a balance between its industrial zones and lush public parks, making it a sought-after suburban residential area.
