Corbeil-Essonnes was officially formed in 1951 by merging two separate municipalities that had long shared a common economic destiny. Located 30 kilometers south of Paris at the confluence of the Essonne and Seine rivers, the city’s identity is deeply rooted in industrial prowess. The abundant water power of the Essonne river once drove the famous 'Grands Moulins de Corbeil,' which for centuries were the primary flour suppliers to the city of Paris. This industrial heritage expanded into high-end printing and papermaking during the 19th century. Today, Corbeil-Essonnes is a key player in the European aerospace sector, hosting a massive Safran Aircraft Engines factory where high-tech propulsion units are manufactured. Architectural highlights include the historic Saint-Spire Cathedral, parts of which date back to the 10th century, and the imposing brick structures of its former mills. The city is well-connected via the RER D rail line and serves as a major commercial and administrative hub for the southern Île-de-France region.
