La Défense is Europe's premier purpose-built business district, situated just west of the city limits of Paris in the Hauts-de-Seine department. Conceived in the 1950s to create a modern financial hub that wouldn't compromise Paris's historic architecture, the district spans 160 hectares across the communes of Puteaux, Courbevoie, and Nanterre. Its skyline is dominated by numerous skyscrapers, including Tour First, the tallest building in France. The architectural centerpiece is the Grande Arche, a massive hollow cube inaugurated in 1989 to commemorate the bicentennial of the French Revolution. With over 3.5 million square meters of office space, it hosts approximately 1,500 companies, including many Fortune 500 headquarters. A unique urban design feature is 'Le Parvis,' a massive pedestrian plaza that keeps vehicular traffic and public transport entirely underground, creating a vast open-air gallery for contemporary sculpture.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
