Set on the left bank of the Seine just west of Paris, Suresnes gives a surprising blend of historical depth and panoramic beauty that feels miles away from the bustling capital. The town is perhaps most famous for the imposing Mont-Valérien, a fortress that played a crucial role in French military history and now serves as a solemn national memorial to the heroes of World War II. For a profound and moving experience, the Suresnes American Cemetery stands on the slopes of the hill, honoring the fallen of the First World War. But Suresnes is not solely about history; it is home to a rich tradition of winemaking. The Clos du Pas Saint-Maurice vineyard still produces local wine, a rare find this close to Paris, which is celebrated during the annual grape harvest festival. Visitors should not miss the panoramic views from the Terrasse du Fécheray, offering one of the most spectacular, uninterrupted panoramas of the Parisian skyline, complete with the Eiffel Tower in the distance. Strolling through the Garden City (Cité-jardins), an architectural marvel of the 1920s designed to provide greenery and light to workers, reveals a visionary approach to urban planning that still defines the town's character today.
