The Eiffel Tower was constructed for the 1889 World's Fair to commemorate the centennial of the French Revolution in Paris. Designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel, the iron lattice tower was originally intended to be a temporary structure standing for only 20 years. At its completion, reaching a height of approximately 300 meters, it became the tallest man-made structure in the world, a title it held until 1930. The tower is composed of over 18,000 individual wrought iron parts held together by more than 2.5 million rivets. Today, it stands as the global symbol of Paris and France, attracting between six and seven million visitors annually as one of the most visited paid monuments. Beyond its role as a tourist attraction, the tower has served as a critical telecommunications hub for radio and television signals since the early 20th century. Visitors can access three public levels via stairs or elevators, offering spectacular panoramic views across the French capital. Despite its massive appearance, the metal framework weighs only about 7,300 tons and is engineered to withstand high winds and temperature fluctuations. The tower is repainted by hand every seven years to protect the iron from corrosion and maintain its distinctive glow. At the foot of the Eiffel Tower, the Champ-de-Mars and Eiffel Tower Stadium hosted the beach volleyball and judo events of the 2024 Olympics. The Olympic rings have adorned the tower ever since.
