Arcueil is a municipality positioned in the Bièvre valley, whose history has been intertwined with the water supply of Paris for nearly two millennia. The city derives its name from the Latin Arculi, referring to the arches of the Roman aqueduct that once channeled water to Lutetia. In the 17th century, Marie de' Medici commissioned the construction of the Medici Aqueduct, an architectural marvel that still dominates the local landscape. This was later supplemented in the 19th century by the Aqueduc de la Vanne, demonstrating the evolution of hydraulic engineering. Beyond its infrastructure, Arcueil served as a scientific hub; the renowned physicist Pierre-Simon de Laplace resided here, founding the Society of Arcueil, which attracted the era's greatest minds. During the industrial revolution, the town became a center for distilleries and chemical manufacturing. Today, Arcueil is transitioning into a modern service-oriented hub, integrating green spaces and contemporary architecture like the Vache Noire district while preserving its unique heritage.
