Gravelines is a remarkable French city in the Nord department, positioned at the mouth of the Aa river on the North Sea coast. It is uniquely preserved as a fortified town, with its star-shaped ramparts and water-filled moats designed by Vauban remaining entirely intact. Historically, its location made it a crucial frontier fortress between France and the Spanish Netherlands, witnessing significant battles like the 1558 encounter. Today, Gravelines is synonymous with energy production, as it hosts one of the largest nuclear power plants in the world. The city's maritime character is celebrated in the seaside resort of Petit-Fort-Philippe, famous for its lighthouse, sandy dunes, and traditional beach huts. Cultural enthusiasts can visit the Museum of Drawing and Original Prints, located within the historic arsenal of the citadel. The town's economy is strongly supported by the energy sector and its proximity to the major ports of Calais and Dunkirk. Gravelines also is home to world-class sporting facilities, particularly for rowing and basketball. This blend of formidable military heritage, seaside charm, and industrial importance makes it a key landmark in Northern France.
