Audruicq is a historic market town located in the Pas-de-Calais department of northern France, tucked away within the distinctive polder landscape of the Artois region. The town's origins are deeply tied to the reclamation of marshlands starting in the 12th century, creating a fertile agricultural plain that remains the backbone of the local economy today. Audruicq is most famous for its spirited Wednesday morning market, widely regarded as one of the best and largest in northern France, where visitors can find everything from local chicory and potatoes to livestock. The town center features classic Flemish-influenced architecture, with red-brick houses and a grand town hall overlooking the market square. Geographically, it is surrounded by a network of drainage canals and fertile fields, positioned perfectly between the major ports of Calais and Dunkirk. As an administrative hub for the surrounding 'Country of the Polders,' Audruicq provides a high quality of life with excellent rail connections to regional cities. It remains a bastion of traditional northern French culture and hospitality.
