Auchel is located in the heart of the Pas-de-Calais department, within the historic Artois region. Its destiny was permanently altered in 1851 with the discovery of coal, leading to the rapid expansion of the Marles Mining Company. For over 120 years, coal was the lifeblood of Auchel, shaping its social fabric, politics, and urban planning. The city is famous for its 'corons', uniform brick housing built for miners, which are now protected as part of the UNESCO World Heritage designation for the Nord-Pas-de-Calais Mining Basin. Following the closure of the mines in the 1970s, the city embarked on a difficult but steady economic transition. It has successfully preserved its heritage through the Museum of Mining, while also investing in modern infrastructure and green spaces. The surrounding landscape is dotted with 'terrils' (spoil tips), some of which have been reclaimed by nature and now serve as unique biodiversity sites and outdoor recreation areas for the city's 10,000+ residents.
