Château de Chenonceau
The Château de Chenonceau, situated in the Loire Valley near the small village of Chenonceaux, is one of the most visited private monuments in France. Originally constructed between 1513 and 1517 by Thomas Bohier and his wife Katherine Briçonnet, the castle is uniquely built across the Cher River on the foundations of an older mill. It is widely known as the 'Château des Dames' due to the significant influence of powerful women in its history, including Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de' Medici. Diane de Poitiers added the arched bridge across the river, while Catherine de' Medici later built the two-story gallery upon it, giving the structure its iconic silhouette. During World War I, the gallery served as a military hospital, and in World War II, it was used as an escape route from the occupied zone to the free zone. Today, the estate includes meticulously maintained formal gardens, a 16th-century farm, and a floral workshop, preserving its status as a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture.
