Ergué-Gabéric is a commune in the Finistère department of Brittany, functioning as an eastern suburb of Quimper. The town's history is deeply intertwined with the industrial revolution in Brittany, specifically through the Bolloré family who established the Odet paper mills in 1822. This site became the birthplace of the famous OCB cigarette paper brand. Today, the town remains a strategic industrial hub, hosting advanced manufacturing plants for electric batteries and buses. Beyond industry, Ergué-Gabéric is a bastion of Breton culture and heritage. Its most significant landmark is the 15th-century Kerdévot Chapel, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture featuring a memorable carved wooden altarpiece from Antwerp. The geographic setting is defined by the lush valleys of the Odet and Jet rivers, offering a mosaic of woodlands and meadows. The town's name itself reflects its ancient roots, combining 'Ergué' (meaning hilltop) with 'Gabéric' (after a local saint). For visitors, it gives a blend of technological modernity and pastoral peace, with many historic manors scattered across the countryside and a strong commitment to preserving Breton festivals and language.
