Brest is located in the far west of Brittany in one of Europe's finest natural bays and is a key French naval port. The city's history is deeply intertwined with the sea; it was developed into a major maritime base in the 17th century under Cardinal Richelieu. During World War II, Brest's strategic importance led to its near-total destruction by Allied bombing, followed by a post-war reconstruction in a modern style. An architectural highlight is the Pont de Recouvrance, one of the largest vertical-lift bridges in Europe, spanning the Penfeld River. The Castle of Brest, a fortress with over 1,700 years of history, now houses the National Navy Museum. A modern landmark is Océanopolis, a vast ocean discovery center with aquariums representing different climatic zones. The city serves as the starting point for many transatlantic sailing races and hosts the international 'Fêtes Maritimes de Brest' every four years.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jul–Sep.
