Louhans-Châteaurenaud is a captivating town in the Saône-et-Loire department of Burgundy. It serves as the historic capital of the Bresse Bourguignonne region and is world-renowned for its architectural heritage. The town's centerpiece is the Grande Rue, featuring an extraordinary row of 157 arcades dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, which creates a unique and scenic shopping environment. Historically, the current municipality was formed in 1973 by merging Louhans and Châteaurenaud. Gastronomy is at the heart of the town's life; every Monday, Louhans hosts one of France's most famous traditional markets, particularly known for the trade of 'Poulet de Bresse,' the only poultry in the world with a protected designation of origin (AOC). Geographically, the town is situated on the Seille river, a navigable tributary of the Saône that makes it a popular stop for river cruising and pleasure boating. Notable cultural sites include the Hôtel-Dieu, an ancient hospital housing a remarkable historical pharmacy with a fine collection of apothecary jars. The surrounding landscape is typical of the Bresse countryside, dotted with traditional brick and timber-frame farmhouses. Louhans-Châteaurenaud remains an animated cultural hub, celebrating its deep-rooted traditions and exceptional local products with numerous festivals throughout the year.
