Viriat is an extensive commune located in the Ain department, in the heart of the historic Bresse region. It is notable for its large land area, comprising a central town and numerous outlying hamlets and traditional farms. Historically an agricultural hub famous for the Bresse poultry production, Viriat has evolved into a key economic driver for the area. Its geographic location directly north of Bourg-en-Bresse has led to the development of major industrial and commercial zones, such as the Parc de la Neuve, making it one of the most dynamic municipalities in the department. Despite its rapid urban expansion, Viriat remains deeply attached to its Bressan roots, celebrated during the annual 'Viriathis' folk festival. The local architecture features characteristic red-brick and timber-framed buildings unique to the region. With its comprehensive network of hiking trails and modern community facilities, Viriat has a balanced lifestyle, blending economic vitality with rural charm, attracting a growing population of young families and professionals.
