Gray is a historic town in the Haute-Saône department, prominently situated along a loop of the Saône river. Its strategic location made it a premier inland port from the Middle Ages until the 19th century, serving as a vital link for transporting agricultural products and ironware across eastern France. The town is architecturally diverse, split between the high town, featuring the ancestral château site and administrative buildings, and the low town, centered around the river quays. The Baron-Martin Museum, located in the former castle, holds a prestigious art collection, including works by masters such as Rembrandt and Ribera. Gray is also home to the Basilica of Notre-Dame, a Gothic masterpiece with a rich interior. Today, the town has successfully transitioned into a hub for river tourism, with its marina attracting boaters exploring the scenic Saône. Geographically, Gray sits at the crossroads of Burgundy and Champagne, blending the cultural influences of both regions. The surrounding countryside is noted for its lush fields and traditional Franche-Comté villages, making Gray a central point for regional exploration and a quiet, culturally rich place to live.
