Charny-Orée-de-Puisaye is a unique large-scale municipality in the Yonne department of Burgundy, established in 2016 as a result of the merger of 14 historical villages. This consolidation has made it one of the largest communes in France by surface area, covering a significant portion of the verdant Puisaye region. The area is defined by its characteristic bocage landscape, a patchwork of small fields, hedges, and woodlands, and its historical ties to pottery and ironworking. The central village of Charny acts as the commercial heart, featuring a notable 16th-century market hall and several well-preserved timber-framed structures. The Ouanne river flows through the municipality, adding to its natural charm and supporting a variety of outdoor activities. Economically, the town is a leader in rural tourism and sustainable agriculture, benefiting from its proximity to major attractions like the Guédelon medieval construction site. It remains a bastion of traditional Burgundian culture, where seasonal markets and craft fairs continue to thrive.
