Valence is located on the left bank of the Rhône River in the Drôme department and is often referred to as the gateway to Southern France. The city's history dates back to Roman times when it was established as Valentia Julia, and it later became a significant religious and academic center during the Middle Ages. Architecturally, Valence is distinguished by the 11th-century Saint-Apollinaire Cathedral, a masterpiece of Romanesque art, and the Renaissance-style Maison des Têtes, known for its intricate stone carvings. The city sits exactly on the 45th parallel, which is commemorated by a local monument, and enjoys a transition between continental and Mediterranean climates. Today, Valence serves as a dynamic economic hub and features one of the largest river marinas in France. Culturally, it is renowned for its high-quality gastronomy and the expansive Parc Jouvet, which provides seven hectares of green space in the heart of the city. The blend of historical heritage and modern urban development makes Valence a key administrative and tourist destination in the Rhône Valley.
