Trévoux is a historic gem located in the Ain department, perched on the banks of the Saône River. For several centuries, it served as the capital of the sovereign Principality of Dombes, a status that granted it unique legal and economic privileges. This autonomy sparked a golden age in the 17th and 18th centuries when Trévoux became a major European intellectual hub; its printing presses produced the 'Journal de Trévoux' and the massive 'Dictionnaire de Trévoux', which were essential works of the Enlightenment. The town's skyline is defined by the ruins of its 13th-century feudal castle, featuring a rare octagonal tower that has panoramic views of the Beaujolais hills across the river. Trévoux was also world-famous for the craft of gold-wire drawing, a highly specialized industry that produced fine threads for luxury textiles. The town's steep, terraced streets are lined with historic landmarks, including the Parliament of Dombes building with its beautifully painted ceilings. Today, Trévoux is recognized as one of the 'Most Beautiful Detours in France', attracting visitors with its rich heritage, its lively riverfront activities, and its strategic position along the ViaRhôna international cycling route.
