Privas is the administrative capital of the Ardèche department in southeastern France, located within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It holds the distinction of being one of the smallest departmental prefectures in the country, yet it has a rich and dramatic history. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Privas was a significant bastion of Protestantism, leading to its near-total destruction during the Siege of Privas in 1629 by the forces of King Louis XIII. The town successfully rebuilt itself and eventually found international fame in the late 19th century through its chestnut industry. Today, Privas is widely recognized as the world capital of candied chestnuts (marrons glacés), with the famous Clement Faugier brand being a key pillar of the local economy. Geographically, the town is situated in the Ouvèze valley, surrounded by rugged hills and volcanic plateaus, offering remarkable natural scenery. Key landmarks include the historic Louis XIII Bridge and several vantage points that provide panoramic views of the Ardèche mountains. It remains a tranquil and welcoming town, blending administrative importance with a strong culinary identity.
