Grenoble-Nord refers to the northern sectors of the Alpine city and its immediate suburbs like Saint-Egreve and Saint-Martin-le-Vinoux. Positioned in the valley between the Vercors and Chartreuse mountain ranges, this area has some of the most dramatic landscapes in France. Geographically, it is shaped by the Isere River, along which significant scientific and industrial clusters have developed over the decades. Historically, the northern district was a pioneer in hydroelectric power and paper manufacturing during the late 19th century. Today, it is home to the Scientific Polygon, a world-class research hub hosting international facilities such as the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The district’s architecture includes a mix of industrial heritage sites and modern housing integrated with green transport networks like the tramway. The area also serves as a starting point for exploring the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park, while the nearby Bastille cable car provides a historic aerial link to the heights above the city, offering panoramic views of the entire valley.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
