Saint-Égrève is situated on the northern edge of Grenoble, set dramatically at the very foot of the panoramic Chartreuse mountains. The town is overwhelmingly dominated by the imposing, nearly vertical rock face of Mount Néron, giving the entire setting a distinctly rugged and spectacular Alpine character. Despite this dramatic mountainous backdrop, the town center is surprisingly green and welcoming; the Parc de Fiancey is a vast, beautifully landscaped park featuring a serene lake that attracts walkers and picnickers on sunny afternoons. The Vence river also flows through the community, lined with pleasant, shaded footpaths. Above all, Saint-Égrève serves as a premier basecamp for outdoor enthusiasts: many of the most memorable, and challenging, hiking and rock-climbing routes leading straight into the heart of the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park begin right here. Historically, the area also features old water mills and elegant manor houses that speak to its rich agricultural and artisanal past. Its immediate proximity to Grenoble means you can easily enjoy an intense mountain hike and be back for a bustling city dinner.
