💡 Tips
- Mariehamn is highly walkable; rent a bicycle to easily explore the town and nearby islands.
- The official language in Åland is Swedish, not Finnish, so a few words in Swedish like 'Tack' (Thank you) will go a long way.
- When arriving by ferry, the terminal is just a short walk from the city center.
- For the best maritime history experience, combine a visit to the Åland Maritime Museum with the museum ship Pommern.
- Many shops and cafes may have shorter opening hours on Sundays, so plan your shopping during the week.

Mariehamn was founded in 1861 by Tsar Alexander II and named after his consort, Maria Alexandrovna. It is the capital of the autonomous Åland Islands, a Swedish-speaking region belonging to Finland. The town is situated on a narrow peninsula between the Slemmern and Västerhamn bays and serves as a vital port for ferry traffic between Finland and Sweden. Mariehamn has a strong maritime tradition and was once home to one of the world's largest fleets of sailing ships. The museum ship Pommern, a four-masted barque from 1903, is anchored in the Western Harbour and stands as a significant testament to seafaring history. The town's architecture is characterized by wide boulevards lined with linden trees, earning Mariehamn the nickname 'The City of a Thousand Lindens.' Beyond its maritime heritage, the town gives numerous cultural institutions, such as the Åland Museum and the Åland Art Museum. Its strategic location in the Baltic Sea makes the town an important hub for trade and tourism in the region. The relaxed atmosphere and proximity to the sea define the character of Northern Europe's smallest provincial capital.
