Kastelholm Castle (Finland)

Weather…

Kastelholm Castle is the only medieval fortress in the Åland Islands and stands as one of the archipelago's most significant historical landmarks. First mentioned in records dating back to 1388, the castle originally served as a strategic outpost for controlling maritime routes in the Baltic Sea. During the era of Swedish dominance, it was a vital administrative hub, hosting prominent figures such as King Gustav Vasa in the 16th century. A somber episode in the castle's history occurred in 1571, when the deposed Swedish King Eric XIV and his wife Karin Månsdotter were imprisoned within its walls. The complex suffered multiple damages from fires and warfare, most notably a devastating blaze in 1745 that left much of the structure in ruins. In the 20th century, the castle underwent extensive restoration and now functions as a museum documenting medieval life and the political history of the Åland Islands. Situated picturesquely by a bay in the Sund municipality, it is part of a cultural complex that also includes the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum.
