Sottunga is famous for being the smallest municipality in Finland by population, giving it an exceptionally personal and peaceful atmosphere. The island is strategically located on the ferry routes between mainland Finland and Mariehamn, making it an excellent stopover for travelers. The village center is characterized by classic red wooden houses, well-kept gardens, and a historic 18th-century wooden church dedicated to Mary Magdalene. For active vacationers, Sottunga has marked hiking trails that lead through lush forests and along the coast. Sailors especially appreciate the well-equipped guest harbor, often described as one of the most welcoming in the entire archipelago. There are no large hotels here, but rather cozy bed and breakfasts that convey the authentic island lifestyle. The gastronomy is dominated by homemade products and freshly caught fish. Despite the small population, there is a small grocery store and summer restaurants at the harbor. The best time for a visit is from June to August, when the weather is handy for cycling and boating. Sottunga is the epitome of Scandinavian slowing down. The island is accessible via Ålandstrafiken ferries from Långnäs or Galtby. A walk to the observation tower on Södö hill rewards visitors with a fantastic panorama of the surrounding island world.
