Vanhalinna Hill Fort (Finland)

Weather…

The Vanhalinna Hill Fort in Lieto is one of Finland's most significant archaeological sites. This steep elevation rises 55 meters above the Aura River valley and has been used as a defensive structure since the Bronze Age, starting around 1100 BC. During the Viking Age and the early medieval period, Vanhalinna was a central stronghold for controlling trade routes along the river. Archaeological excavations have unearthed numerous artifacts such as weapons, jewelry, and tools from various eras, proving a long history of settlement. In the 14th century, with the rise of modern stone castles, the hill lost its military significance. Today, the site houses a museum and a manor house donated to the University of Turku. The hill fort features a wide view over the cultural landscape of the Aura River valley and is a key location for research into Finnish prehistory and early history.
