Kuusisto Castle Ruins (Finland)

Weather…

The Kuusisto Castle Ruins in Kaarina were once the medieval residence of the Catholic bishops of Finland. Construction of the stone castle began in the early 14th century, around 1317, and it served as a religious and administrative power center for over two centuries. The fortress was strategically located on an island on the coast to provide protection against attacks. In 1528, during the Reformation, King Gustav Vasa ordered the demolition of the castle to prevent it from becoming a Catholic stronghold. Today, the ruins are a significant archaeological monument and provide insights into medieval architecture and lifestyle. The site is part of a protected cultural landscape along the Piikkiönlahti bay. Systematic excavations in the late 19th century revealed the foundations and cellar vaults that are accessible to visitors today.
