Uusikaarlepyy, known as Nykarleby in Swedish, is a historic town located in the Ostrobothnia region at the mouth of the Lapuanjoki River. Founded in 1620 by King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden, it was for a long time officially the smallest town in Finland, which allowed it to preserve its unique 19th-century wooden architecture and peaceful atmosphere. The town is famously the birthplace of the renowned Finnish-Swedish author Zachris Topelius, whose family home and the Juthbacka manor are significant cultural landmarks today. With over 85 percent of the population being Swedish-speakers, it serves as a bustling center for Swedish-language culture and traditions in Finland. The local economy is built on a foundation of agriculture and fur farming, complemented by modern industrial companies specializing in energy technology and mechanical engineering.
