Toivakka Church
Toivakka Church, completed in 1882 based on the designs of architect L.I. Lindqvist, is a wooden cruciform church world-renowned for its unique interior decoration. While the exterior displays a traditional late 19th-century Finnish timber style, the interior houses spectacular ceiling paintings created in the 1970s by the artist Pellervo Lukumies. These paintings are executed in a spirited Pop Art style and depict biblical themes using bright colors and modern forms, which caused a sensation at the time of their creation. This bold juxtaposition of historic architecture and radical modern art makes Toivakka one of the most extraordinary church sites in all of Finland. The altarpiece, dating from 1887, was painted by Eero Järnefelt, one of Finland's most esteemed artists, further enhancing the building's immense artistic value.
