Santa Isabel Cathedral (Equatorial Guinea)

Weather…

The Santa Isabel Cathedral in Malabo is one of the most impressive examples of Spanish colonial architecture in Africa and the religious centerpiece of the capital. Located on the west side of the Plaza de la Independencia, the building is designed in the Neo-Gothic style. Construction began in 1897 under the direction of architect Luis Segarra Llairadó and was officially consecrated in 1916. Its striking facade is characterized by two 40-meter-high towers that define the Malabo skyline. The cathedral was built using sandstone, some of which was imported from Spain, highlighting its exceptional historical value. Following a devastating fire in 2020, the building underwent extensive restoration to preserve its architectural splendor for future generations. Today, it serves not only as the seat of the Archbishop but also as a symbol of the country's deep-rooted Christian tradition and colonial past.
