Wadi El Rayan Protected Area, located in the Faiyum Governorate about 150 km southwest of Cairo, is renowned for its unique desert landscapes and man-made lakes. Established as a protected area in 1989, it features two large lakes at different elevations connected by Egypt's only waterfalls. These lakes were formed by the diversion of agricultural drainage water from the Faiyum Oasis into the desert depression. The area is a critical habitat for migratory birds and various desert wildlife, including the slender-horned gazelle and the fennec fox. Within the protectorate lies Wadi Al-Hitan (Valley of the Whales), a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its 40-million-year-old fossils of primitive whales that show the evolutionary transition from land to sea. The region is also popular for its massive sand dunes, sulfur springs, and geological formations, making it a hub for ecotourism and scientific research.
