Goubetto is a small settlement in the Dikhil Region of western Djibouti. It is situated in an arid and sparsely populated plain, characterized by extreme temperatures and low rainfall. The town is located near the Ghoubbet-el-Kharab, a cove connected to the Gulf of Tadjoura by a narrow strait, often referred to as the 'Devil's Throat'. This geological feature is part of the Great Rift Valley and features volcanic islands and high salinity. The economy of Goubetto and its surrounding areas is almost exclusively based on nomadic pastoralism, with herders constantly moving with their flocks of goats and camels in search of water and pasture. The settlement's infrastructure is minimal, consisting of some traditional mud huts known as 'akar' and possibly a central water source. Goubetto serves as an important social gathering point and a small trading post for the nomadic Afar communities that traverse the region, allowing for the exchange of essential goods.
