Råbjerg Mile moving dune (Denmark)

Weather…

Råbjerg Mile is the largest moving sand dune in Denmark, situated on the Skagen Odde peninsula in the northernmost part of Jutland. This natural phenomenon covers an area of approximately two square kilometers and reaches a height of up to 40 meters above sea level. Formed during the great sand drifts of the 16th and 17th centuries, the dune contains nearly 4 million cubic meters of sand. It is driven by the prevailing westerly winds, causing the entire structure to migrate toward the northeast at an average rate of 15 meters per year. As it moves, the dune leaves behind a low, moist layer of sand, creating a specific coastal landscape that is strictly protected to allow natural processes to continue. The area was acquired by the Danish state in 1900 to ensure its preservation for future generations. Visitors can observe the raw power of wind erosion and deposition, as the dune gradually buries everything in its path, including roads and vegetation.
