Råbjerg Mile (Denmark)

Weather…

Råbjerg Mile is Denmark's largest moving sand dune, situated near Skagen on the northern tip of the Jutland peninsula. The dune covers an area of roughly two square kilometers and consists of an estimated 3.5 million cubic meters of fine sand. Formed during the great sand drifts of the 16th century, the dune stands up to 40 meters high and migrates at an average speed of 15 meters per year toward the northeast, driven by prevailing westerly winds. Unlike most other coastal dunes in Denmark, Råbjerg Mile has never been stabilized by vegetation, allowing it to remain a dynamic and natural geological phenomenon. As the dune advances, it buries everything in its path, leaving behind a flat, damp strip of land where the groundwater level is reached. Calculations suggest that the dune will reach the main road to Skagen in approximately one to two centuries. The entire area is a protected natural reserve, providing visitors with a rare opportunity to witness a true desert-like environment in Northern Europe.
