Skagen Old Lighthouse (Denmark)

Weather…

The Skagen Old Lighthouse, widely known as Det Hvide Fyr (The White Lighthouse), was constructed in 1747 based on designs by architect Philip de Lange. It represented a significant milestone as Denmark's first brick-built lighthouse, replacing the primitive bascule lights used previously at the dangerous tip of Jutland. Standing 21 meters tall, it initially utilized an open coal fire for illumination, which was upgraded in 1835 to an oil burner equipped with parabolic mirrors. The lighthouse remained in active service until 1858, when the taller Grey Lighthouse was completed nearby. Today, the structure is a protected historic monument and serves as a venue for art exhibitions and cultural events. Its stark white exterior remains a defining landmark of Skagen's maritime history and 18th-century architectural heritage.
