Maiko National Park (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

Maiko National Park was established in 1970 and covers an area of approximately 10.885 square kilometers in one of the most remote regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Situated on the border between North Kivu, Maniema, and Orientale provinces, it encompasses dense, untouched tropical rainforests. The park is of outstanding importance for the protection of three of the country's rarest animal species: Grauer’s gorilla (Eastern lowland gorilla), the okapi, and the Congo peacock. The topography is characterized by steep hills and numerous river systems, which makes access extremely difficult and has contributed to its natural isolation. Historically, the management of the park has been complicated by long-standing armed conflicts and the presence of rebel groups, which hindered wildlife protection. Nevertheless, Maiko remains a critical biological corridor and a genetic reservoir for the flora and fauna of Central Africa. In recent years, international efforts have been made to restore state control and establish conservation programs. The park's dense forests also play an essential role in regulating the regional climate and water cycle.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season from June to September is best for observing gorillas and okapis as trails are less muddy. In the wet season (October-May) the forest is difficult to access but vegetation is lush.
🌅
Best time of day
Gorillas are most active early morning when feeding, before resting in the midday heat. Okapis are crepuscular - look for them in early morning and late afternoon.
📜
Etiquette
Keep a minimum distance of 7 metres from gorillas - retreat immediately if signs of illness appear. No flash photography as it startles the animals; do not eat near them to avoid conflict.
🎒
What to bring
A good pair of binoculars is essential to spot okapis in the forest shade. Long trousers, sturdy boots and rain protection are necessary as it rains frequently and trails are muddy.
🧭
Getting there
Maiko National Park is in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo and is extremely remote. Access is usually via charter flights to Kisangani or Beni, then by 4x4 and on foot.
🦌
What to expect
Okapis are extremely shy and avoid humans; many visitors never see them despite days of searching. Gorilla encounters require hours of hiking and quiet waiting - an experienced guide is indispensable.
