Yangambi is a prominent research hub and biosphere reserve situated on the right bank of the Congo River, approximately 100 kilometers west of Kisangani. The settlement achieved global significance during the colonial era as the headquarters of the National Institute for Agricultural Research in Congo (INEAC), established in 1933. The surrounding Yangambi Biosphere Reserve spans about 235,000 hectares and was designated by UNESCO in 1976. It serves as a critical center for studying tropical biodiversity and the carbon cycle within the Central African rainforest. In recent years, it has become home to the first eddy covariance tower in the Congo Basin, designed to measure gas exchanges between the forest and the atmosphere. The landscape is characterized by primary evergreen forests that provide sanctuary to numerous endangered floral and faunal species. Despite historical challenges related to regional instability, Yangambi remains an indispensable site for global climate science and botanical documentation.
