Lola ya Bonobo is the world’s only sanctuary for orphaned bonobos, located in Kimwenza just south of Kinshasa. Founded in 1994 by Claudine André, the sanctuary occupies 30 hectares of lush primary forest, providing a semi-wild environment for bonobos rescued from the illegal bushmeat trade. Bonobos are endemic only to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and are known for their highly social, peaceful, and matriarchal societies. At the sanctuary, young bonobos receive intensive care from human surrogate mothers, which is vital for their psychological recovery before they are integrated into larger social groups. The ultimate mission of the organization is the successful reintroduction of rehabilitated bonobos into protected wild habitats in the northern Congo basin. Beyond rescue and rehabilitation, Lola ya Bonobo plays a crucial role in conservation education, welcoming thousands of Congolese students annually to learn about their unique natural heritage and the importance of primate protection.
