Maluku is a vast rural commune located in the eastern part of the Kinshasa metropolitan area, situated strategically on the left bank of the Congo River. It was primarily developed as an industrial hub during the 1970s, centered around a massive state-owned steel complex intended to be the cornerstone of national industrialization. Geographically, the town marks the transition from the wide Pool Malebo to the 'Chenal,' a narrow and deep section of the river that is critical for inland navigation towards the northeastern provinces. The port of Maluku serves as an essential transit point for timber and agricultural products coming from the interior of the country to the capital. In addition to its industrial heritage, the area is significant for its fishing industry and large-scale farming, providing vital resources for Kinshasa’s population. Its location along National Road 1 further cements its role as a logistical gateway between the capital and the central provinces. Despite economic shifts over the decades, Maluku remains a key site for urban expansion and future infrastructure projects due to its ample land and river access.
