Kintambo (Léopoldville-Est) (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

Kintambo, formerly known as Léopoldville-Est, is the cradle of modern Kinshasa. It was here that Henry Morton Stanley established the first colonial post on the Malebo Pool in 1881, after concluding treaties with local chiefs like Ngaliema. This site served as a strategic starting point for the exploration of the upper Congo Basin and was the original administrative seat of the growing capital. Its location above the Livingstone Falls made Kintambo the terminus for navigability from the sea and the start of the long inland route. During the first decades of the colonial era, it was a bustling center for trade and military activity before the city center shifted further east to the current Gombe district. Today, Kintambo is a lively urban district that still preserves traces of its historical significance, including old colonial buildings and memorial sites. It remains a symbol of the encounter between European exploration and Central African societies at the end of the 19th century.
