Třeboň City Fortifications (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The city fortifications of Třeboň are an outstanding example of late medieval and early modern defensive architecture in South Bohemia. Due to the city's location in a marshy basin surrounded by fishponds, the walls had to be built on specialized wooden piles for stability. The fortification process began in the 14th century under the House of Rosenberg and was significantly modernized in the 16th century with bastions and earthen ramparts to counter the advancement of firearms. Four major gates have been preserved: the Budějovice Gate, the Svinenská Gate, the Castle Gate, and the Novohradská Gate, each showcasing architectural styles ranging from Gothic to Renaissance. This system protected both the civilian population and the strategically vital Třeboň Chateau. Today, the surviving walls and gates, integrated with the surrounding pond landscapes, are a defining feature of the town's historical center.
