Boubin Virgin Forest (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The Boubín Primeval Forest (Boubínský prales) is one of the most significant forest reserves in Central Europe, located in the Bohemian Forest (Šumava). This forest was placed under protection as early as 1858, making it one of the oldest reserves in the Czech Republic. It gives a rare glimpse into the appearance of the original mixed forests of spruce, fir, and beech that once covered large parts of the continent. Some of the trees here are up to 400 years old and reach impressive heights and circumferences. The 'King of Spruces', which fell victim to a storm in 1970, was once 57 meters high. An educational trail leads around the core of the primeval forest, as access to the core area is strictly forbidden to protect the sensitive ecosystem. On the summit of Boubín mountain (1,362 m), there is a wooden lookout tower that has a panoramic view over the entire Bohemian Forest and, on a clear day, as far as the Alps.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access to the Boubín area usually involves driving to the village of Zátoň or Kubova Huť in the Šumava region. From there, well-marked access trails lead directly to the forest.
📅
Best season
Summer and autumn are the best seasons, offering pleasant temperatures and striking forest colors. Winter access can be very difficult due to deep snow, and spring paths are often muddy.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The trail circles an ancient, untouched forest area featuring massive old trees and dense undergrowth. The paths are generally flat or gently sloping, but often covered in thick roots.
🎒
What to bring
Waterproof hiking boots are highly recommended due to the frequent mud and damp conditions of the forest floor. A warm jacket is useful as the dense canopy keeps the ancient forest cool.
🅿️
Parking
Official paid parking is available at the trailheads in Zátoň and Idina Pila. These areas provide the most convenient starting points and are rarely completely full, except on summer holidays.
⚠️
Safety
For conservation reasons, entering the core virgin forest zone is strictly prohibited; stay on the perimeter trail. Beware of slippery tree roots and the slight risk of falling branches in wind.
⏱️
Time needed
The educational trail around the perimeter of the virgin forest typically takes about two to three hours to walk. Visitors often extend their trip by climbing to the nearby Boubín observation tower.
