Church of Agios Ioannis Agros (Cyprus)

Weather…

The Church of Agios Ioannis Agros is situated in the heart of the scenic village of Agros, within the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus. The current structure was erected in the late 19th century, around 1894, on the site of a former monastery that had been founded as early as the 11th century. The original monastery was demolished in 1894 to make way for the larger parish church that now serves as the community's spiritual center. Architecturally, it is a single-aisle church featuring a distinctive steep timber roof, typical of sacred buildings in this mountainous region, designed to withstand winter snowfalls. Inside, the church preserves valuable religious treasures, including the significant 12th-century icon of Panagia Eleousa, which was salvaged from the old monastery. The church is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and attracts numerous pilgrims annually who admire the fine wood carvings of the iconostasis and the historical atmosphere. Today, the church stands as a central monument to religious continuity and the artisanal traditions of Cypriot mountain villages.
