Amathus was one of the most significant ancient city-kingdoms of Cyprus, situated about eleven kilometres east of Limassol on the island's southern coast. According to legend, the city was founded by Amathus, son of King Aerias, and it was deeply connected to the cult of Aphrodite, who possessed a grand temple on its acropolis. The sprawling archaeological site covers a coastal hill and plain, featuring ruins from the Geometric, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods. Key highlights include the remains of the upper city, the ancient harbour which is now partially submerged, and several early Christian basilicas. One of the most famous artefacts discovered here is a monumental limestone vase, which is currently displayed in the Louvre Museum in Paris, with a replica standing at the site. Its strategic maritime location established Amathus as a vital trading hub for copper and grain in antiquity. Today, the ruins provide a fascinating glimpse into the religious and political structures of ancient Cyprus.
