Fortress of Loma de la Cruz (Cuba)

Weather…

The Loma de la Cruz is a prominent hill in the city of Holguín, named after a large wooden cross placed there on May 3, 1790. A Franciscan friar named Francisco Antonio de Alegría erected the cross to establish a religious tradition, which is still celebrated today as the 'Romerías de Mayo.' To reach the summit at 261 meters above sea level, visitors climb a staircase of 458 steps built between 1927 and 1950. At the top lie the remains of a small 19th-century Spanish fort used to defend the city during the wars of independence. The fort allowed for 360-degree surveillance of the surrounding area and is an example of colonial military architecture. Today, Loma de la Cruz is the most famous lookout point in the city, offering panoramic views across Holguín. The original cross was destroyed several times by lightning and replaced with new versions, the latest in 1991. The site blends religious tradition with military history and modern tourism.
