Valley of the Sugar Mills (Cuba)

Weather…

The Valley of the Sugar Mills, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988, comprises three interconnected valleys (San Luis, Santa Rosa, and Meyer) near Trinidad. During the 18th and 19th centuries, this area was the epicenter of Cuban sugar production, with over 50 sugar mills operating simultaneously at its peak. The most iconic structure in the valley is the 45-meter-high Manaca Iznaga tower, built in 1816 to monitor enslaved workers in the fields. The region serves as a testament to the immense economic power of sugar for the Spanish Empire and the associated social systems of slavery. Today, numerous ruins of manor houses, slave quarters, and mill machinery remain as important industrial archaeology sites. The valley covers approximately 270 square kilometers and is a significant landmark of Cuba's colonial and industrial history.
