Žminj lies at the geographical center of the Istrian peninsula and has been an important crossroads since ancient times. Perched on a 355-meter-high hill, the town has maintained its medieval layout. The townscape is dominated by the remains of the Loredan family castle and the monumental Baroque parish church of St. Michael. Žminj is famous for preserving Istrian traditions; it hosts 'Bartulja' every year, the region's largest folk festival. Gastronomically, the town is a paradise for lovers of 'fuži' (Istrian pasta) and truffle-based dishes. In the surrounding countryside, one can find numerous 'kažuni', traditional small dry-stone huts used by shepherds. Its quiet inland location has an authentic experience of rural Istria, away from the crowded coastal resorts, serving as a handy base for cycling and hiking through the rolling hills.
