Zadvarje is situated at a strategically important point on the edge of the Cetina canyon, where the hinterland opens towards the coast. The village is primarily known for the spectacular 'Velika Gubavica' waterfall, plunging over 50 meters into the gorge. An observation point in town provides a dramatic view of this natural wonder. Historically, Zadvarje was a significant fortress town on the border between the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Venice, evidenced by the ruins of the ancient Duare fortress. Unique to the region is the traditional market (Pazar) held every Tuesday. For centuries, livestock, handcrafted products, and local specialties have been traded here. It is one of the last places in Dalmatia where you can still experience this original atmosphere. The village's architecture is a blend of historical defensive structures and classic Dalmatian stone houses. The nature around Zadvarje invites extreme outdoor sports such as canyoning and climbing. Culinary-wise, Zadvarje is famous for meat dishes, especially spit-roasted lamb and suckling pig, prepared fresh on market days. The Church of Saint Anthony is the religious hub of the community. Its location on the old trade route makes the village easily accessible from the coast (Brela or Makarska) as well as from the highway. Zadvarje features a fascinating combination of dramatic nature, living tradition, and military history.
